■TitleField Test of a Patrol Routing Algorithm Combined with Crime Prediction

■Abstract

This presentation introduces an algorithm for optimal patrol routes based on crime predictions and evaluates its effectiveness. GPS data was collected in areas using crime prediction-based patrol routes and compared with non-predictive areas. A web application for planning patrol operations and a mobile application for navigation and GPS data recording were developed for the PoC.A two-month field test targeting cable theft was conducted in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The number of crimes decreased by 68% citywide, with areas using crime predictions witnessing an 81% reduction, and non-predictive areas experiencing a 56% reduction.The presentation will demonstrate the crime prediction accuracy of the algorithm (SPLM method) used in the PoC and the patrol route optimization algorithm while measuring the crime encounter rate “Patrol Score.” The field test results in Belo Horizonte is discussed, using GPS data from patrols. The study shows that crime prediction-based patrol routes are effective for crime prevention and efficient police resource utilization.
